New initiative on alcohol and cancer
Research has long shown a clear link between alcohol and cancer, yet several studies indicate that public awareness of this remains limited. For example, few Swedes are aware that the link between alcohol and cancer also applies to low consumption levels.
Everyone has the right to know that alcohol increases the risk of cancer. To spread this knowledge, over 15 organizations joined forces in the initiative "Alkohol ökar risken för cancer" (Alcohol increases the risk of cancer), including Regional Cancer Centers in cooperation, Systembolaget, IOGT-NTO, the Swedish Council for Information on Alcohol and Other Drugs (CAN), and the Swedish Cancer Society.
The hub of the initiative was a website that gathered facts and research in an accessible way. At the launch, a Sifo survey was also released, mapping how many Swedes were aware of the connection between alcohol and cancer. The initiative received significant attention; for instance, spokesperson Lena Sharp was interviewed by TV4 Nyhetsmorgon and the news agency TT, resulting in news articles in over 30 newspapers, including Aftonbladet. The radio program Studio Ett also highlighted the study.
Obeya was responsible for developing the concept, design, and website, as well as planning and executing the press outreach.
