Maria Hazard: "As Communicators, We Carry a Significant Responsibility"

Magasin K has interviewed Obeya’s CEO, Maria Hazard, about her entry into the PR industry, the responsibility communicators bear, and the importance of having collective bargaining agreements (kollektivavtal).

Maria Hazard once dreamed of a career within the EU but pivoted to PR. Today, she is the CEO of Obeya, a PR agency she co-founded with a vision for responsible communication.

Eight years ago, Maria and her colleague Canan Yasar started Obeya because they felt that communicators have a responsibility they need to earn more effectively. At the time, ad agencies were trying to do PR, and PR agencies were doing advertising, she explains.

- We felt that everyone was trying to do everything, but no one really specialized in anything. As communicators, we influence how people feel about themselves, which parties they vote for, and what they pick up at the grocery store. That is a significant responsibility that we must acknowledge and take seriously.
